People usually start packing the obvious rooms first. The bookshelves get boxed, the spare room becomes a staging zone, the kitchen slowly empties into labelled cartons, and the garage turns into a negotiation between optimism and hard rubbish. Then, often much later than it should, someone opens the bathroom cabinet and realises there’s a whole miniature world in there.
That’s why it’s worth learning how to pack bathroom items for moving before the final week, because bathrooms are full of small, leaky, fragile, half-used and strangely essential things that can make moving day more annoying than expected if they’re left until the last minute.
Start by throwing out what shouldn’t move
The bathroom is one of those rooms where products quietly accumulate. Old sunscreen, expired medication, hotel shampoos, three almost-empty moisturisers, blunt razors, mystery samples and products you tried once but didn’t love can sit there for years because they don’t take up much space individually.
Before packing anything, sort properly. Check expiry dates, get rid of products you won’t use, and dispose of medication safely rather than tossing it casually into a random box. Moving is a good chance to stop carrying around bathroom clutter that’s only survived because it was hidden behind the toothpaste.
This first step makes the rest of the packing much easier, because you’re only dealing with items that actually deserve space in the new home.
Keep daily essentials separate
The bathroom is awkward because you’ll still need it right up until moving day. Toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, skincare, shampoo, medication, contact lenses, hair products and basic first aid items shouldn’t disappear into a box you won’t see again for a week.
Pack a separate essentials bag or small container for the things you’ll need during the final days, the move itself and the first night in the new place. Treat it more like an overnight bag than a moving box. That way, you won’t be digging through cartons at midnight just to find pain relief or face wash.
If you’re moving with children, pets or anyone with medical needs, keep their essentials clearly separated too.
Prevent leaks before they happen
Bathroom products are notorious for leaking at exactly the wrong time. Shampoo, conditioner, body wash, oils, cleansers and liquid makeup can all create a mess if they spill inside a box, especially when packed beside towels, electrical items or anything absorbent.
A simple way to reduce the risk is to remove the cap, place a small piece of plastic wrap over the opening, then screw the lid back on. You can also place bottles in zip-lock bags or upright containers for extra protection. Anything already half-broken, cracked or sticky probably isn’t worth moving.
Protect fragile and sharp items
Mirrors, glass bottles, ceramic accessories and electric grooming tools need a little care. Wrap fragile items in towels or soft cloths, and keep sharp items like razors, scissors or nail tools covered and grouped safely.
Make the first night easier on yourself
A well-packed bathroom won’t be the most glamorous part of your move, but it can save a lot of frustration when you’re tired, dusty and trying to feel human again.
If you sort early, separate essentials and contain anything that might leak, the bathroom becomes much less chaotic. It’s one of the smallest rooms in the house, but packing it properly can make the first night in your new place feel far more comfortable.
