Can the Netherlands Surprise at the Cricket World Cup in India?

Can the Netherlands Pull Off an Upset on the World Stage?

When an Indian journalist hears  that only around 5,600 people actively play cricket in the Netherlands, his jaw drops in disbelief. The idea that the Netherlands is gearing up to participate in the Cricket World Cup in India – the mecca of cricket – is nearly inconceivable. To him, there are likely more cricket enthusiasts living in a single apartment block in his neighborhood.

The Big Upset at the Qualification Tournament

The road to the World Cup started with a bang: a phenomenal victory over the West Indies at the qualification tournament last July. Few had anticipated such a result. But the Dutch showed their mettle, fighting through to the end and ultimately defeating Scotland in a nail-biting do-or-die match to secure their World Cup ticket. “As a small cricketing nation, we don’t feature on the big countries’ radar,” says Tim de Leede, a former international player and father of current squad member Bas de Leede. “India and other top countries play series against each other regularly. To them, it was a shock that the Netherlands qualified.”

But how did they manage to do it? The secret lies in the experience of the team and their unwavering belief in their own abilities. Sports betting could draw a parallel here; sometimes you win unexpectedly, sometimes you lose, but you always believe in the next opportunity. This team sees itself as capable of making it through the group stage and maybe even reaching the semifinals. “They genuinely believe they can surprise,” De Leede adds. That confidence started with that legendary win over the West Indies. And that was no small feat.

That Legendary Win Against the West Indies

The turning point for the Netherlands was that crazy game against the West Indies. “It was almost unbelievable,” recalls De Leede. The West Indies batted strongly, and it seemed like the Dutch had no chance. But they fought back and ended up in what could be called a ‘penalty shootout’—a super over. And the Netherlands? They won it almost effortlessly. “With two fingers in the nose,” as De Leede describes it. Moments like that shape a team; they give you the feeling that anything is possible.

The Big Stage: Cricket Heaven in India

The World Cup kicks off for the Netherlands with a tough match against Pakistan. A significant challenge, given that Pakistan is a team that thrives on big moments. Next up are matches against New Zealand, South Africa, and, of course, the host nation, India. It’s the kind of lineup that makes you pause. The Dutch are determined to be among the top four in the group of ten to advance to the semifinals, but that’s no easy task.

And how about that final group match against India on November 12 in Bangalore? Without a doubt, that will be the highlight for the Dutch players. “For them, it’s everything,” says De Leede. “Players are like demigods. It’s one of the happiest days of their lives when they get to watch their team play.” In the Netherlands, it’s a stark contrast, where cricketers are just regular people, not celebrities.

Cricket in the Netherlands: An Undiscovered Gem?

It’s a pity that cricket in the Netherlands still stands somewhat in the shadows, especially considering that worldwide it’s the second most popular sport after soccer. De Leede points out, “Cricket has the wrong image here; it’s never really been discovered like in other parts of the world.” Yet, the charm of the game and the achievements of the national team might slowly change that perception. If the Dutch manage a few surprise wins, who knows what could happen?

But let’s be honest, to achieve that, everything needs to align. “Other countries have such big players, genuine superstars,” De Leede notes. If the Netherlands wins even just the first couple of games, opponents will start adjusting their tactics. Coaches of major cricketing nations will then start scrutinizing the Dutch lineup for weaknesses. Still, that also means they’re being taken seriously, which in itself is already a small victory.

What Does the Future Hold?

The Dutch team, led by coach Ryan Cook, has the will and belief to fight for every run and wicket. But a bit of luck will also come into play. Perhaps things will fall into place during key moments; perhaps we’ll see an unexpected hero step up. One thing’s for sure: cricket fans around the world will be watching. And if they manage to pull off even one miraculous win, it could change everything.
